11/21/2020 – Chapter Meeting – demo by Charlene Fuhrman-Shulz
November 21 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Charlene Fuhrman-Schulz began painting in many different mediums with watercolor, acrylics, inks on many different surfaces from paper to yupo paper to tiles and other surfaces which she says a blow torch for resin would likely melt! In 1989 she began a serious study of Sumi-e Painting with Professor Ju. While she has studied with many masters and developed her own style, she says you can still see the influence of Professor Ju in her work. I see it in the delicate way she moves her brush. She insists her brush and ink must dance and sing! Charlene has worked to capture the movement and life of birds and flowers, actually all of nature in her landscapes as well. Her travels to China Taiwan have inspired the spirit of her work. When she retired from the government in 2016 her work took off in all new directions. The P’o Mos moved on to pouring alcohol ink on many different surfaces. Paintings became shirts, scarves, accessories, and home goods which you can see on her website. Currently, she teaches at the Art League School in Alexandria [note sign up for next year’s class is coming soon] and is an active member of the League of Reston Artists. Given this spectrum of talent, I wish we could spend all day learning, but Charlene has promised some articles on the techniques for further publication. On November 21 st at 1 pm she will demonstrate traditional Sumi-e with birds and pine and a wash for the background. Don’t miss it! Through the Art League School in Alexandria, she will be teaching an online workshop on Dec. 5 and 6. [subjects to be determined] and the winter 9-week session starts January 12th. Charlene can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org. Her phone number is 703-307-3154. Charlene will also be showing her work in the historic house at Green Spring Garden on March 22, 2021 through May10, 2021. There will be no reception due to Covid, however.
