Lilya Greyson – Artist Statement
Lilya Greyson is an award-winning artist who has shown her art works over the past 25 years in numerous juried and non-juried shows in Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland. Her paintings are represented in many private collections.
She had a solo art show in Great Falls, VA in 2007, entitled Around the World and Home Again. Her focus for that show was painting the wide variety of international places visited in her travels, as well as the joy of beloved places back home. These paintings gave her the opportunity to explore the deep, inner impact that each place had on her, by reflecting on her emotional responses while painting. This show received newspaper coverage, positive reviews, and high sales.
Lilya trained with some of the most prominent teachers at the Torpedo Factory Art League School. Her training included a wide variety of styles and media. She has also taken a number of Sumi-E workshops with master painters, Henry Wo, Lian Zhen and Kay Stratman, among others.
In the past, Lilya has been a member of Great Falls Studios, was on their board of directors and exhibited often in their group shows. Lilya was also a member of The Atelier, a group art studio sponsored by Great Falls Studios.
Lilya is currently a member of both the League of Reston Artists and The NCAC of the Sumi-E Society. She is Vice President for Exhibits on the board of directors of NCAC. She shows frequently with both organizations, as well as with private groups of artists.
Lilya enjoys painting Sumi-E and Po’Mo paintings in watercolor and ink, using rice and cotton papers, and gold or silver shikishi boards. She also regularly paints in oils and other media, and occasionally sculpts in clay.
Of her artistic vision, Lilya says, “My life experiences have informed my art work. I have a deep curiosity about underlying dynamics and meaning, nurtured by my past career as a psychotherapist. I have travelled extensively, allowing me a sensitivity and appreciation of cultural and ethnic variety and achievements. A natural expression of my deepening spiritual life is the movement of my painting subjects from people and places I have encountered, to celebrating nature, emotional and spiritual connection, and symbolic ways to convey spiritual wisdom, beauty, and joy. These are all the elements of Sumi-E painting and the reason I find it so compelling and rewarding!”
